Global Terrorism & Cyber Security
Along with Jihad and other forms of terrorism, cyberspace is also a global phenomenon, characterized by a lack of boundaries. The entire world is interconnected via communications infrastructure where damage caused by malware in one location can paralyze an entire state.
Sophisticated levels of terrorist capacity require cooperation to secure our critical infrastructure - such as water, electricity and public transportation. Cyberspace threats are also seen in the vulnerability of databases to abuses starting with those that store biometric information. Cyberterrorism can seduce hearts and minds and be used as a tool to tilt election processes. Casting doubt on election results—a form of psychological warfare-- could be disastrous in democratic regimes.
We talk about the lone-wolf terrorist. We must pay more attention to the lone-wolf hacker. He can cause massive damage to a state or even several nations. And his techniques can be exploited by terror organization such as ISIS, Al-Qaeda, Hamas or Hezbollah.
